I am buying a pitching machine for my 16 years old nephew as a surprise birthday present, but I am quite naive when it comes to baseball. I researched the market but there are pitching machines from $25 to $2000. I was just wondering what difference do they have to offer and what kinda machine would be best for him?
If your nephew can hit ill go for the 200$ to 500$ range if he is still learning you might wanna go cheaper because usally the high cost ones are the ones that throw the fastest.

I really want a pitching machine but i know i'll never have enough $$. Is anyone else with me?
I love my batting cage (a gift from my late uncle), and can't get enough of it. Unfortuately, I can't really use it in the winter time (well, I can, but it's much harder), and it's just sitting in my backyard right now, covered in snow. I can't wait until it gets warm enough for me to crank it up again.

The Casey Pro is the official Pitching Machine of Major League Baseball. It is a great machine for a number of reasons. And to prove that we mean it, it comes with a limited Lifetime Warranty! The Casey Pro throws gas up to 100 mph, to simulate even the most elite of today's flame throwers. But hitting the fastball is only part of the game. This is why the Casey Pro also throws every breaking ball imaginable at variable speeds as well. Its Center-of-Gravity design allows a full 360 degree left-right rotation and a 120 degree vertical pivot with a flick of the wrist. It allows for ultra-fast head adjustment to move from pitch to pitch, or from drill to drill. Built-in transport wheels and quick-release legs allow for easy mobility. The ATEC dual, concave wheel design makes it the most accurate machine available. Match this with high-strength steel construction and durable powder-coat finish and its clear why it is The Pros' Choice!

I want to know if these balls are plastic or rubber and also if you can replace them with soft-core baseballs.
But mainly if you can replace them with soft-core baseballs.
http://www.amazon.com/Franklin-Sports-2113-Pitching-Machine/dp/B00099YLE8
Are the balls hollow?
It uses 73mm dimpled balls, and it includes six balls.
For use with any machine that can throw competition grade baseballs (except the Hitting Streak® series of machines)
Tuffy® balls are recommended when maximizing machine speed is the primary goal
Polyurethane
So my guess is the softcore balls may be too soft and light.....but at the worst it would just shred a ball.
EDIT**********
No they are not hollow. They are close to the same as a baseball.

The new Casey Pro 3G is the official Pitching Machine of Major League Baseball. ATEC has produced this machine to enhance the already great attributes of the original Casey Pro machine. The 3G has a micro adjustment feature; pitches can be programmed to be pinpointed. As I was watching it last night, the pitchers were not consistent in giving the players a good ball to swing at. So why wouldn't they use a pitching machine to give the players a perfect pitch everytime to hit a home run?
Is it because of tradition?
Homerun derby+pitching machine=way more homeruns/entertainment
they use a pitcher and not a machine because the batters want to get the ball to where they feel comfortable to hit it out. like puljos he did so bad because hes used to getting under neath the ball in reg. games. when he had his own pitcher he was over thinknig it and saying where hed like to hit it and hes not used to that.

You get 100 pitcher off the pitching machine, do you think you could do it?
Question 2 - How many guys out of a 100 picked off the street do you think could?
it's alot harder than it sounds Maybe 2 out of 100 off the street could. Maybe 15 out of 100 highschool seniors could. Most people that think they could wouldn't have the bat speed
